If there is one thing I remember from growing up in Chicago in the 90’s…
It has to be the music.
I grew up listening to house music before I knew that’s what it was called.
To me it’s just what was on the radio.
One moment they’re playing Madonna…
And the next Robin S. - Show Me Love or Cajmere - Percolator.
Around 14 years old I started going to house parties and the default music of choice was Ghetto House and Juke.
Those dirty lyrics and uptempo club jams always turned the party into a frenzy.
Funny enough it wasn’t until years later, once I moved to NY, did I realize that not everyone grew up listening to Ghetto House and Juke lol.
Turns out it was a lot more local and “Chicago” than I realized growing up.
I have an Instagram Reel going viral right now that taps into this nostalgic energy which in turn inspired todays newsletter.

I found this amazing playlist that contains almost 2,000 great house, freestyle, and ghetto club jams from the late 80’s and 90’s.
Not all of the tracks are specifically from Chicago (although a ton are) but almost all of them were popular in Chicago (among many other cities).
Yes, you’ve heard some of these songs before but I guarantee you’ll find a ton you haven’t or totally forgot about.
Take your time digging, it’ll be worth it.
Word of caution though, this trip down memory lane might make you emotional.
I’m getting all sorts of flashbacks and feelings hearing some of these records I haven’t heard in over 20 years.
