Curation as Creation
Read Time: 5 minutes
We’re all drowning in content.
The internet opened up the floodgates and now it’s information overload.
Heck, even this newsletter is more content.
Add to the fact that if you're a creator and you produce things to share with the world…
Now you have this nagging feeling of not producing enough?
So now you’re buried in content and feel bad about not “keeping up” with the output you think it takes.
No bueno.
Here’s the solution:
Become a curator.
With infinite content at our fingertips, curating what we consume is just as crucial as creating it ourselves.
Creator + Curator
Curation has always been important, but in 2024…
It’s an essential skill.
The best part?
Folks who can curate well aren't just making our lives easier - they're creating just as much value as the original creators themselves.
My life as a DJ and remixer has proven this point.
My Grey Zone Dj mix series is just a collection of songs by other people.
My edits and remixes of other people's music, which were frequently more popular than my originals, allowed me to tour the world and play some amazing shows.
My live DJ sets are a mix of other people's songs and my edits of them.
Underpinning all of this?
Good taste.
Or more precisely, what you consider to be good taste since it’s such a personal thing.
Matter of fact.
Once you find a curator or tastemaker you like, a sense of relief hits you.
Why?
Because it’s like having a bestie with impeccable judgment handpick your favorite things for you.
You know they got you. No stress.
We can all be this person for someone else.
So if churning out fresh creations 24/7 isn't your thing or maybe you're more of a methodical, take-your-time creator…that’s ok.
But give curation a shot.
We all need more of it these days, and it's crazy valuable.
Things you can curate:
Ideas
Tools
Decor
Books
Music
Habits
Events
Trends
Videos
Quotes

Fashion
This list is endless! Get creative!
Curation resources + tips:
Use apps like Readwise to save highlights, notes, and insights from books, articles, and podcasts. You need to organize what you consume.
On social media, you can create content around a recurring "series.” Think of it like a TV show segment updated weekly. That’s what I’m starting to do with HIGH5 on my Instagram.
Feedly News Reader is really good for staying on top of trending news on your favorite topics.
Knowing what to leave out is just as important as knowing what to share. If it doesn’t fit the vibe, let it go.
Infuse your personality into your curation. Your unique touch is what will set your curated collections apart from the rest.
Question to help you focus on WHAT to curate:
What do you feel so excited about that you could spend years researching it, writing about it, and connecting with other people about it?
That’s it! We got a lot of goodies below, including my Adonis x Rihanna edit.
Hit me up if you have any questions or if I can help in some way. I respond to every email.
Thanks!
