If I was a new DJ I would...

What I would focus on in 2025.

I got this question from a reader recently:

“Hey! Not sure if you’ve already covered this, but I would love to hear about what you wish you knew when you were first getting started as a DJ (i.e. mindset, how to structure your days, what to prioritize (building out playlists, making content, booking gigs, etc))

I’m a beginner DJ & am feeling a bit overwhelmed with wanting to grow my skills but also my music library and also start getting an audience. Would love your perspective on this :)”

I totally get it.

There’s so much to focus on, it can feel overwhelming.

But I’ve got some ideas…

Practice > Everything

If you want to DJ live, in front of people at parties and potentially tour…you have to put in the time to practice and dig for music.

No shortcuts here.

Yes, the tech has gotten easier and you can get halfway decent at mixing faster than in previous decades. But you still need consistent, focused practice to build confidence with your setup and software.

Here’s how I would approach it.

1 day a week: Dig for music, add cue points, and organize your crates. Building good habits here will set you up for years and make your gigs less stressful.

3 sessions per week: Just you and your setup practicing transitions and blends. 45 minutes to 1 hour each session is enough time. Go for longer if inspired. Important! Even on those “off” days where every blend sounds like ass…keep going!

1 hour a week: Watch DJ tutorials on Youtube. Don’t go crazy here, just watch enough to learn something new and then go ahead and practice it.

Despite all the“noise” out there about makes a “successful” DJ, knowing how to rock a party is still the foundation and that starts with regular practice.

Ok, so you’re locked in and organized now what?

Taste > Technique

Prioritize taste over technique.

Yes, you want to be the best technical DJ you can be but ONLY… if you can match that with TASTE.

You could have flawless transitions but if your selection is generic, safe, or not a fit for the room…you’ll lose me.

A few tips on taste:

  • Don’t be afraid to be unapologetically you.

  • Build your library around what you like… NOT just trends.

  • Follow what energizes you, even if it’s weird, old, or “uncool”.

It’s ok, you can leave the Brandy and Ashanti acapellas alone.

When everyone is looking around and paying attention to everyone else.

Your unique sound will come from within.

That’s how you stand out in 2025.

Content Can Wait (But Document Anyway)

Don’t stress about making content right away.

You’re still figuring out your sound and that takes time.

But if you feel the urge to post… think document.

Invite people along for your journey. Share what you are learning as you learn it.

Yes, it’ll take some courage but that’s the edge.

Authenticity wins on social.

Hope this helps.

If you're early in the journey, here’s my best advice:

Keep it playful, keep it consistent, and refine your taste.

P.S. If this resonated, forward it to a friend just getting started.
