Make shitty art today.
To make the best art you can in the future.
Sure, we know that Tiger Woods, Mozart, and Picasso showed amazing abilities right out of the gate.
But for the rest of us…
The only way to be great is to be really bad at first.
Embrace the messy, the awkward, and the imperfect.
I didn’t know ANYTHING about making beats when I started.
I couldn’t even pronounce the word quantization, let alone know what it meant for my music.
(FYI it’s when your computer or sampler fixes the timing of your notes to make them "on beat.")
This was in the early 2000s, so finding information was tough.
No YouTube or iPhone back then.
It was probably a whole year of off-timed beats before I had a friend show me what it was.
My beats got better almost instantly, haha.
This probably isn’t a new idea to you.
You understand that before you can be good at something, you have to start somewhere.
But are you really embracing it?
Or are you letting "what if it doesn’t work?" shape your decisions?
Is fear of failure holding you back more than it should?
Because it’s not whether you are going to fail, look like an idiot, sound terrible, etc…
But to what extent and for how long?
“The first draft of anything is shit”
Sara Blakely, the founder of Spanx, is famous for asking her children at dinner, "Did you fail at anything today?"
I LOVE THAT.
Because it’s not about avoiding failure but learning from it.
And you know what’s funny?
Most successful creatives and entrepreneurs we look up to have a long history of art they never released, businesses that failed, etc.
Turns out…
The more you fail, the more likely you are to succeed in the long run.
My suggestion?
Fail more. You will only come back stronger for it every time.
