Social Media Is Hard but Worth It

I committed to posting over 100 reels on Instagram this year.
And as I expected…
It’s hard.
It’s easy to make content when you’re going viral.
When you’ve been blessed by the “algorithm” and the likes and followers are flowing in without even trying.
That’s a lot of fun!
But when the virality dries up…
Can you stay consistent and keep going?
Can you keep showing up with enthusiasm and adding value?
This is when most people likely quit.
If they even get started at all.
See, we still have people like this…
Someone drinking the haterade.
It’s a weird, outdated take full of his own insecurities and projections.
His tweet ignores reality and replaces it with what he wishes it would be.
To not take advantage of video as a dj and music producer (or artist of any sorts) in 2024 leaves you at a disadvantage, no question.
There are way too many parties, DJs, and music producers that have leveraged video to their advantage to name here, but just take a few minutes and think about it.
By not building your personal brand online, your world will stay smaller.
Sorry, but you can complain or you can adapt.
One will force you to grow and push you into a “bigger” version of yourself.
And well, complaining…
That only attracts other complainers.
As they say, misery loves company.
What that tweet fails to understand is that…
ALL OF THE ATTENTION IS ON SOCIAL MEDIA.
Even those who complain about social media…
DO IT ON SOCIAL MEDIA?!
So keep this in mind…
It's easier to engage people where they already hang out than to direct them to sites they rarely frequent.
To be clear, social media's got its downsides for sure, but for getting eyes on your art and attracting attention…
It's unmatched.
Not to mention, it’s also FREE.
See, I’m old enough to remember:
burning cd’s and giving them out at shows.
manually putting up posters around my city of Chicago to promote upcoming gigs.
mailing my music to record labels and waiting weeks for a response, if I ever got one at all.
It’s a blessing that we don’t have to do that anymore.
The best part though?
You get to define how you show up online.
By creating content that will attract the type of fan/follower you want.
Step up and become someone others can trust.
Add value (don’t just talk about yourself).
Build your community. Online there is a community for EVERYTHING.
You also need way less “fans” than you probably think.
Please read 1,000 True Fans if you haven’t before.
Honestly, anyone can do this.
There’s enough attention to go around for everyone.
But the content has to be worthy of others attention. That’s the hard part.
And sure, it’ll take some time to find your flow…
Heck, I’m 40 videos in and still experimenting and trying out new ideas and video formats.
Getting enough reps in to get the data to help you improve is half the battle.
Here is a good example of a video reel for me that got great engagement, a lot of bookmarks (added value) and is simple enough for me rinse and repeat.
