The painful truth about releasing 150+ songs.
Why only 20% of your work matters.
I’ve put out over 150 songs in my life.
Many official and many bootlegs.
Heck, here’s 83 edits, originals, and remixes right here.
I bring that up not to flex.
But because out of all those songs…
Only a handful actually moved the needle on my career.
That’s means that most didn’t do sh*t. Tons of songs were totally ignored and others made very minor moves.
But all in all if I had to guess…
Less than 30 songs are the ones that really mattered.
Songs that took me on tours around the world.
Songs that got synced for good money.
Songs that still get brought up in conversation years after making them.
At face value, that’s a sobering thought and almost kinda defeating if you really think about it. All that music and all that effort for only a few songs to actually matter.
Turns out, this wasn’t just luck or random.
There’s a principle discovered over 100 years ago that explains exactly why this happens. Seriously, it might just change how you approach your work moving forward.
Let me explain…
The 80/20 Rule aka the Pareto Principle.
In the early 1900’s, an Italian economist named Vilfredo Pareto noticed that 80% of the land was owned by 20% of the people.
Then he saw it everywhere: a tiny percentage creates the majority of results.

Economists and business schools continued to run with the idea, test it, and expand on it. It’s held up strong enough that here I am a century later writing to you about it.
Put simply: 20% of your effort is responsible for 80% of your outcomes.
And specific to us creatives…
20% of your creative work will account for 80% of your success.
Basically, a small amount of our work will account for most of our wins.
It’s brutal but true.
When I look back, those numbers aren’t a failure. They’re proof. 150 songs and only 30 that moved the needle…
That’s pure 80/20 in action.
I was doing exactly what works (although I didn’t know it at the time).
You only need a few hits. But you have to create enough to find them.
That’s the beauty of 80/20, it’s rooted in math so you can trust the numbers to work in your favor.
If this hit home, take 5 minutes today and ask:
What’s my 20%?
And am I giving it enough of my energy?
Brenmar
P.S. Here’s another question you can ask yourself to help you hone in on the 20% of actions that really count:
“If I stopped doing 80% of what I’m doing right now… would it even matter?”
You want to find the 20% that is the most important to your goal and focus on that for the most leverage.
Trust, I’m not perfect with it. I still find myself doing a lot of 80% busywork. But now I notice it and then either delegate or eliminate as quickly as I can. You got this.
